Excavation Contractor Insurance overview
What Excavation Contractor Insurance Covers
An excavation contractor needs more than a truck policy. The program starts with commercial auto for dump trucks, pickups, service trucks, and trailers that travel public roads in Northern Virginia. General liability covers the excavation work itself, including third-party injury and property damage at the job site.
Contractors equipment, often written as inland marine, is the usual home for excavators, skid steers, loaders, and other machines that are not registered for the road. Workers' compensation, umbrella or excess, hired and non-owned auto, pollution, and bonds can be added when the operation and the contract call for them.
- Commercial auto for road-going trucks, pickups, and trailers
- General liability for excavation operations
- Contractors equipment / inland marine for mobile machinery
- Workers' compensation, umbrella or excess, pollution, and bonds when needed
Road Vehicles Versus Mobile Equipment
A dump truck, crew pickup, or equipment trailer that runs Fairfax, Prince William, or Loudoun roads is a commercial auto exposure. An excavator, skid steer, or similar machine that stays on the job site is typically mobile equipment, not an auto.
Mixing those two on a single auto policy is a common source of claim gaps. We place the road units and the site machines on the forms that actually fit them, then issue the certificates general contractors require. Dump truck insurance remains the landing page for operators whose main need is the hauling unit.
Excavation Operations We Insure in Northern Virginia
We write excavation contractors based around Manassas and working across Northern Virginia. Typical operations include excavation, grading, trenching, site preparation, land clearing, and hauling dirt, sand, gravel, aggregate, topsoil, fill, stone, or mulch related to that work.
For-hire material hauling, own-account hauling, and new ventures can all be quoted. Tell us the mix of trucks, trailers, and machines you run so the auto, equipment, and liability pieces line up.
- Excavation and grading
- Trenching and site preparation
- Land clearing
- Job-site material hauling, including dirt, sand, gravel, and mulch
Certificates, Filings, and Contract Requirements
Road-registered dump trucks still need Virginia liability coverage. As of January 1, 2025 the baseline registration minimum is 50/100/25, and for-hire operators with vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVWR must meet higher Virginia minimums, currently $750,000 in liability. Interstate for-hire hauling may also need FMCSA authority and an MCS-90 endorsement.
General contractors often require additional-insured wording, higher liability limits, and proof of workers' compensation or umbrella before you start. We structure the excavation package around those contract terms rather than quoting a generic contractor policy.
