What School Bus Insurance Covers

Commercial auto liability is the core coverage, with limits that must reflect the per-occurrence exposure of a bus carrying multiple children. Physical damage covers the bus. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is critical when a third-party driver causes an accident.

Note: under Progressive's commercial auto program, church-owned vehicles that transport passengers exclusively to and from home and school or daycare are not eligible. Private school buses operating regular routes and activity buses are covered.

School Bus Types We Insure

We insure Type A, B, C, and D school buses for private schools; activity and sports buses used for field trips and athletic events; preschool and daycare transport buses for private organizations; and church activity buses for events (not home-to-school routes).

Virginia Requirements for School Bus Operations

Virginia has specific vehicle inspection and driver requirements for school buses under VDOE pupil transportation regulations. Private school operators must meet the same driver qualification standards as public school bus operators. Federal regulations can apply to interstate for-hire school transport, but school-sponsored extracurricular trips organized, sponsored, and paid for by a school district are excepted from FMCSA financial responsibility minimums.
