School Bus Insurance overview
What School Bus Insurance Covers
Commercial auto liability is the core coverage, with limits that must reflect the per-occurrence exposure of a bus carrying multiple children. Physical damage covers the bus. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is critical when a third-party driver causes an accident.
Note: under Progressive's commercial auto program, church-owned vehicles that transport passengers exclusively to and from home and school or daycare are not eligible. Private school buses operating regular routes and activity buses are covered.
- Commercial auto liability with per-student limits
- Physical damage
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist
- Activity transport coverage
School Bus Types We Insure
We insure Type A, B, C, and D school buses for private schools; activity and sports buses used for field trips and athletic events; preschool and daycare transport buses for private organizations; and church activity buses for events (not home-to-school routes).
Virginia Requirements for School Bus Operations
Virginia has specific vehicle inspection and driver requirements for school buses under VDOE pupil transportation regulations. Private school operators must meet the same driver qualification standards as public school bus operators. Federal regulations can apply to interstate for-hire school transport, but school-sponsored extracurricular trips organized, sponsored, and paid for by a school district are excepted from FMCSA financial responsibility minimums. Contact our advisors to confirm which rules apply to your specific operation.
What Affects Your School Bus Premium
Bus age and capacity, driver training and MVR records, whether buses run fixed routes or activity-only, operating territory, and prior loss history all affect pricing.

School Bus Insurance FAQs
- What commercial vehicle insurance is required in Virginia?
- Virginia requires liability coverage on every registered vehicle, and as of January 1, 2025 the state minimum is 50/100/25 ($50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage). Commercial operators almost always carry substantially higher limits, and motor carriers hauling for hire or operating in interstate commerce often need federal filings such as the MCS-90 endorsement and FMCSA authority. The right limits depend on your vehicle weight, cargo, and where you operate. Our licensed advisors can confirm exactly what your operation needs.
- How much does commercial truck insurance cost in Virginia?
- Premiums depend on your vehicle type and weight class, your radius of operation, the limits you carry, your loss history, and the driving records of everyone behind the wheel. A local contractor van running short routes around Fairfax will price very differently from a tri-axle dump truck hauling long-haul or a tow operator on call statewide. Because we are an independent agency, we compare options across multiple carriers to find the right fit rather than quoting a single rate. Call (703) 551-2000 and we can talk through the factors that apply to your operation.
